In art, restoration refers to interventions and treatments that serve to re-establish a given historical state and thereby improve the legibility and aesthetic integrity of an object or building or, where appropriate, make its use possible again. The concept of "conservation-restoration" is now preferred to that of "restoration" to designate a discipline intended for the material examination of cultural property, and the taking of measures, directly or indirectly, to slow down their process of alteration and improve their legibility.
